Category Spotlight: Capacity Building

Over the past 15 years, the Canada Community-Building Fund has been invested into 492 capacity building projects across Ontario, totalling $74.5 million.

This category is primarily intended to help municipalities develop asset management systems, but can be used for other plans as well.

Asset management is a structured and strategic approach that helps municipalities make cost efficient decisions with a long-term vision and manage assets proactively. It’s a plan that supports long-term capital investment decisions, and helps prevent service failures by ensuring capital investments are made in a timely manner.

Under this category of the CCBF, projects can include things like the development and implementation of studies, strategies, systems and staff training related to asset management, capital investment plans, integrated community sustainability plans, asset management plans, and other long-term infrastructure plans.

Project example:

The Town of Mattawa is investing its Canada Community-Building Fund contributions into updating its asset management plan. This project promotes sustainable services levels for residents, while maintaining responsible budget use and debt structure. This is an ongoing project with an expected completion date of 2023.
