History of the Fund

The federal Gas Tax Fund transfers over $2 billion to Canadian municipalities each year. The Fund was:

• Established by Budget 2005 to provide $5 billion over five years;
• Extended in Budget 2007 to provide $2 billion/year between 2010 and 2014;
• Made permanent by the Keeping Canada's Economy and Jobs Growing Act at a maximum of $2 billion/year;
• Indexed at 2%/year by the Economic Action Plan 2013 Act, No. 1, with indexing applied in $100 million increments; and
• Doubled for the 2019-2020 fiscal year by Budget 2019.
